This little fella was resting just under the water on top of a lilypad near the rose garden at Thanksgiving Poing Gardens.

Thanksgiving Point in Lehi is a wonderful family-friendly attraction all year round, but it becomes extremely budget-friendly in August when each location is only 2 dollars on Tuesdays. We have been to the gardens 3 times this month and it has been lovely.

I love the county fair! These are the main course entries from the dutch oven cookoff this afternoon. Everything looks fabulous! Of course we watched the dutch oven officionados work, and listened to some music, looked at the 4-H exhibits, saw the Hogle Zoo show, checked out the animals (you know I love the chickens with the WILD hair-dos) and enjoyed the clown show. We enjoyed some kettle corn but were so sad that there were no navajo tacos.

Utah County Fair

American Fork is in Utah County and this week is the Utah County Fair. The theme this year is "The Fairest of Them All" and involves a competition between the cities to see which will be crowned... "The Fairest of Them All". The fair runs Wednesday through Saturday down at the fairgrounds in Spanish Fork.

The FAIR IS FREE as well as FREE PARKING. Don't forget your wallet though, because you are bound to find something you will want to buy. Example: Navajo Tacos (YUM)

Stitched some photos together for a panorama at Highland Glen park last Tuesday. We meant to go Monday for family night, but the rain scared us off. Tuesday was perfect, though. We enjoyed feeding the ducks some stale hot dog buns that were kindly shared with us and watched a Boy Scout troop go the extra mile to clean up trash around the lake.

Hogle Zoo

We have been saving up our Cache Valley cheese wrappers to get into Hogle Zoo free and finally went up on Friday. What a busy but great day at the zoo! We loved the bird show so much we saw it twice.

If you don't know about the Cache Valley cheese promotion, you should! It's awesome... all you have to do is present 4 Cache Valley cheese packages (empty!) and you get a free ticket to the zoo, the Bees or the movies. You gotta hurry, because it's only until the end of July! Here are more details.

We went to an Evening Program up at the Timpanogos Caves National Monument last Friday. The theme was gold panning and it was a blast! We have improved our technique and are ready to strike it rich.

They have free (with your paid canyon or parks pass) classes each Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings throughout the summer on many different topics.

Chadder's Breakfast

Chadder's now offers breakfast and it is quite tasty. The kids couldn't get enough of the potato breakfast thingies and I thought the breakfast sandwiches were yummy, too. I am notorious for wrapping up leftovers and putting them in my purse, and the baby found herself a leftover sandwich a few days later and STILL thought it was good. Sorry if that grossed you out.

There's a new Grease Monkey in town. March 6th they had their grand opening, complete with TWO Grease Monkeys, balloon animals, a bouncy house and a barbecue! Look for them on State Street near Target.

Almond Fried Chicken

So there are several really good Chinese Restaurants in American Fork, but not one of them serves up a decent plate of Almond Fried Chicken. In desperation, I scoured the internet for a recipe that would resemble those tasty gooey nuggets I am used to enjoying at the Double Dragon in Kennewick. This was pretty close and pretty tasty. Unfortunately, I dirtied about every dish in my kitchen trying to put it all together, but the recipe is totally worth giving a shot.

So I am a bit late in posting about the Saving Main Street rally that took place a few months back... but I did attend and take some photos and had a great time. This is Helen and she makes the most AMAZING blessing gowns. Check out her website. She has a business, You Will Be Blessed, along Main Street here in American Fork.

Her website tells this about her:

"Helen is the designer and creator of our baby gowns. She was professionally trained in Europe and has over 30 years of sewing experience, including 13 years sewing for world famous designer Christian Dior in New York City. She now lives in Highland, Utah with her family."

It's supposed to get really cold tomorrow, and then storm. I wanted to get out and enjoy the sunshine today while we still can. Apparently it was colder than I thought, because the crab apples were frozen, the wet leaves on the ground were frozen, and all of our fingers were frozen by the time we came back inside.

Square Foot Garden or Just Raised Beds?

I checked out the squarefoot gardening video and book from the American Fork Library. Though I didn't create my own raised beds yet, I am extremely interested in the system and plan to create my own squarefoot garden next year. I believe these are what is left of the squarefoot gardens at Thanksgiving Point, but they are more like just raised beds without the dividers. Still a very lovely garden.

Official American Fork Tree

I have heard the orange barrel called the Utah state tree many times, but now I am realizing it should be called the official American Fork City tree. With the installation of the pressurized irrigation, streets everywhere are closed and redirected. The construction moves from day to day, not to mention hour to hour. The other day I went to the store with no problems and on my way back it took me 20 extra minutes to get home because they had closed off the roads I had driven on earlier!

I have always loved the idea of a tandem bike. You get the exercise of riding a bike, but the teamwork and support of working with a friend. When I was in junior high there was a kid who rode one to school... by himself. That seems so LONELY. When do I get to ride one across the country with my loved one?

It was road trip time. Just got back from Island Park and YELLOWSTONE! Had a blast and enjoyed EVERYTHING about the trip.

The mountain man was showing off his mountain man medallions. This is just a sample, the ones from this year he was wearing on his belt. I've never seen anything like these before, in fact I have never heard of them.

Can I post a few photos today? We went to the American Fork History and Heritage Pageant on Friday night and had a wonderful time. We loved the pageants, the watermelon, the carriage ride and the "famous $.25 ice cream cones". The pageant ran Friday, Saturday and finishes up tomorrow (Monday) night. At $3 a person or $10 a family it's a steal of a deal! If you are in the area, this is a great idea for family night.

I am extremely proud of my little garden this year. The spring gave us spinach, lettuce and peas. This is my first little summer harvest from last week. Since then, we have also had a cucumber and LOTS more cherry tomatoes. I used the basil to make a pesto recipe that I found on the web that uses pistachios. It turned out scrumptious!

This pretty teapot was amongst the many treasures at the Star Mill. This historic mill, turned antique shop suffered a fire last year, but is now back in business. This is a wonderfully interesting asset to our community. Stop by if you are in the area!

Geocachers

For Steel Days a few weeks back, they had a geocaching activity that took us around the city. It was a blast! I didn't want to post any photos until now, in case I spoiled it for anyone who still wanted to do it. With Steel Days long over, I figure that it's safe now.

These fellows are avid geocachers and I can't remember how many hundreds they have found!

August Themeday: Metal

This beautiful metal sculpture is seen along one of the main drags in American Fork, notMain/State Street, but Pacific Avenue. The Simple Earth Foundation boasts this sculpture in their front yard. My nieces and nephews have taken art classes there and I would love to take a pottery class sometime!

NOTE: This is a photo from January when it was so cold and snowy I couldn't wait for summer. Now that it has been near or at 100 for a few days, I am dreaming of snow!!

Last night, for family night, we went to the American Fork Library for their summer reading program about insects. They had the Bean Museum from BYU there with some bug specimens, both dead and alive, and a leopard gecko.

Okay, so I have been a haphazard blogger lately, but I have a good excuse. I have been working on a few little projects. The cutest of which is shown here. My sister did the embroidery and I pieced, tied and did the binding.

Well, I did and it was a rockin' good time! I am so spoiled because I have seen them TWICE on this tour. Once, last summer at the Key Arena in Seattle and this last weekend at USANA here in Utah.

4 Sting concerts in 4 years... everytime we say, "WE HAVE TO GO! IT WILL BE OUR LAST CHANCE!" But, so far we have been blessed with lots of chances!!

We had the most wonderful family home evening last night, which involved the Steel Days geocaching activity (though I will post pictures of that later... don't want to ruin anyone's fun!), a tour of the ML Bigelow organ shop and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers presentation at the DUP Relic Hall in American Fork. This is one of the DUP ladies telling a story about a pioneer woman who planted her garden, only to find her chicken eating all of the seeds out! The story didn't end well for the chicken, he ended up getting his "craw" removed and becoming chicken noodle soup! This lady was a WONDERFUL story teller.

This morning was the first annual Tour De Donut in American Fork, in conjunction with Steel Days. The course was a 7 mile loop, biked three times. Between loops the riders could stop and eat as many donuts as they want, and take off 3 minutes from their time for each one. The website emphasized: NO PUKING!
