March 2008 Theme Day: Graffiti or street mural

I've been missing for a few days and now late with my theme day post because we ran off to Moab this weekend for some sun and adventure. The weather was perfect, but we did end up driving through a blizzard in Spanish Fork Canyon on the way home.

Even though it's 3+ hours from here to Moab, I am going to show off some of the pics I took there later this week. To my knowledge, there isn't another City Daily Photo Blogger in Utah and it's a shame to not share the delicate arch with the world!

My theme day photo was taken last fall in downtown American Fork just a block from the library on Main Street.

American Fork doesn't really have what I would consider interesting graffiti, but it does have this beautiful mural downtown next to the bike shop on Main Street. Also, there are giant posters of Tahitian Noni (not pictured) on the side of the old abandoned Walmart store on 5th east, maybe I will have to show those off some time.

Enjoy Theme Day around the world by checking out these participating blogs:

Got Liberty? Ron Paul Revolution at the AF Library

Of course I am voting for Mitt Romney, but this guy is pretty interesting. He has some fanatical supporters here in Utah and his name seems to be plastered everywhere. Is this just Utah or is the Ron Paul Revolution occurring all over the USA?

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Now that Thanksgiving is over, I will finally embrace the fact that Christmas is almost here. The stores have been trying to get us to buy presents, candy and decorations since September and one of the local radio stations has been playing all Christmas music since Halloween. I was trying out the nighttime setting on our camera and took this tonight of a friendly Santa in the neighborhood.

Antique Bicycle

On my afternoon walk yesterday, I noticed a sign for L & L Hypnosis near Main Street in American Fork. While I was snapping a picture of the sign, a man came out and asked if I wanted some info, and I realized it was the same man from the poster - the man riding the old fashioned bike. His name is Lloyd Dison and he pulled out his antique bicycle for me and rode around the parking lot. The seat came up to my armpit, it was amazing to watch him get on!

Veteran's Day, Observed

Last week was the 6th Annual Gingerbread House Festival at Thanksgiving Point. Although this is in Lehi, UT, it is a community-wide event. This is a fantastic event that brings the community together for a fun holiday tradition of old fashioned gingerbread houses and raises money for Utah's PTA and the Boy Scouts' Learning for Life program.

The gingerbread houses are made and donated, judged and then auctioned. They vary from traditional graham cracker-type houses made by children or scout troops, to nearly professional houses or castles and villages that took MONTHS to assemble. Last year there was a Hogwart's Castle that blew my mind! This is just a portion of a gingerbread house display titled, "I'll be home for Christmas" and as you can see it is a soldier outside of his barracks in the desert. To the left of him, you can just see a little bit of frosting snow and presents, but that is the yard to his house and his barbie wife is standing in the door. It was so touching, I thought it was appropriate for Veteran's Day.

I want to say Thank You to all of the men and women who have served or who are serving our country in the Armed Services. God Bless You!!

As Seen On Main Street: Day 1

Why does this old truck have a shopping cart in the back? I know it is wise/trendy to bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store nowadays, but this is something I have never heard of.

I had a fun walk down the Main Drag in American Fork today and will be posting a few more pictures from my trek this week.

Don't forget that tomorrow is election day in The States. Those of you who live in Utah won't have a chance to forget, we have been inundated with ads for and against Referendum 1 for what seems like months and it will just get more intense until the election is passed.

I am going to make a prediction: I don't think that Referendum 1 will pass.

NOTE: Referendum 1 is the name of the school voucher bill here in Utah. It allows parents to pull their students from public schools and take funding with them to pay for private schooling. It is VERY controversial here!!

Cabin

This old building stands adjacent to the Library on about Main Street and First East in AF. There are a few other cabins and a museum (which I haven't been into yet) standing there. Pioneer heritage is very important to the people in American Fork.
