American Fork's Parking Meter Plague

This unusual monument stands in front of the Historic City Hall. I have posted it before, but that was when I didn't know anything about it. Lori from the Art's Council explained to me that American Fork's downtown used to have parking meters all up and down the main street. She remembers going downtown with her mother and putting money into the meters. This memorial tombstone was erected when the parking meters were done away with.

Seen From I-15 (4 of 5): US Mint

I have not been coy about my love for Samoas and Thin Mints. I find this billboard clever and cute.

"My Mom is a Princess. My Dad is a Prince." 'Street Mural'

This would have made a very tender themeday post for this month, but I only just took the photo on Wednesday. I don't know who wrote it, just that it was written on a driveway while I was out enjoying the pretty, but chilly, weather with a friend and her dogs.

I love the sentiment and believe that it is true!

I am glad to be back posting about American Fork and the wonderful places and people that are in this city.

Speaking of wonderful American Fork, I just heard this week about a fabulous event coming up in June. On June 9th, the American Fork Library will be having a Fablehaven party, complete with the author, Brandon Mull. I still don't know all of the details, but all of you fairies and other mythical creatures need to start planning your costumes. I know I am!!

Also, did you see that I guessed 3/4 eliminated American Idols correctly?

March 2008 Theme Day: Graffiti or street mural

I've been missing for a few days and now late with my theme day post because we ran off to Moab this weekend for some sun and adventure. The weather was perfect, but we did end up driving through a blizzard in Spanish Fork Canyon on the way home.

Even though it's 3+ hours from here to Moab, I am going to show off some of the pics I took there later this week. To my knowledge, there isn't another City Daily Photo Blogger in Utah and it's a shame to not share the delicate arch with the world!

My theme day photo was taken last fall in downtown American Fork just a block from the library on Main Street.

American Fork doesn't really have what I would consider interesting graffiti, but it does have this beautiful mural downtown next to the bike shop on Main Street. Also, there are giant posters of Tahitian Noni (not pictured) on the side of the old abandoned Walmart store on 5th east, maybe I will have to show those off some time.

Ace, Billiards and Snooker

The Thai Village is the absolute best place to get Thai food in American Fork. I think it might be the only place to get Thai food, actually, but it is REALLY GOOD. This sign hangs on the west wall of the restaurant. From this vantage point, the food smells divine! I don't know that they actually have "snooker" downstairs, but it is a cute sign.

Flour Girls and Dough Boys

The Flour Girls and Dough Boys Artisan Bakery and Cafe is a relatively new addition to the downtown area. It was formerly the Naborhood Bakery, and before that, the Bryson Bakery. My friend Heather used to make the cinnamon rolls at Bryson Bakery and they were TO DIE FOR. (The secret ingredient is turkey flour from Lehi Roller Mills.) (oh, and butter, lots of butter.)
I haven't been to the Flour Girls and Dough Boys yet, but we parked there on our way to the dollar theater tonight and I begged my hubby to take me there on a date sometime. I will have to go back and take some photos during the day, but I peeked in the window and the decor is so cute!
UPDATE: Read about how good the food is HERE.

Got Liberty? Ron Paul Revolution at the AF Library

Of course I am voting for Mitt Romney, but this guy is pretty interesting. He has some fanatical supporters here in Utah and his name seems to be plastered everywhere. Is this just Utah or is the Ron Paul Revolution occurring all over the USA?

Welcome Home!

I passed this sign this afternoon when I didn't have my camera with me and I had to go back. I don't even know the family who lives in this home, but their excitement is contagious.
Welcome home!! Glad to have you back. Thank you for your sacrifice.

Finders Keepers is a furniture store along Main Street in American Fork with an interesting storefront. It's right across the street from the American Fork Library.

As Seen On Main Street: Day 2

This cute little gas tank is in a yard just off of Main Street. I love the little bear on it and long for the days when I could get gasoline for 35.9 cents a gallon. That would be a steal!

The exit polls show that Referendum 1 is being defeated tonight. That is making someone around here happy. ;)

City Daily Photo Blog Theme Day: The Color Blue (AND PINK, in my case!)

This big blue sign caught my eye as I drove past the American Fork Hospital. They have a cancer care center there that is wonderful. I know that because I had a good friend and a sweet aunt who received care here. They have both passed on now, but I will be forever grateful to the people who served them there.

Cancer is frequently on my mind, probably because I knew 4 people who passed away from cancer in 2006 and it really shocked me. Also, in October, I participated in "Pilates for Pink" at the American Fork Recreation Center. This was an opportunity to raise awareness of breast cancer and raise money to fight it.

Also, as we were exercising, Christy, the instructor, spouted factoids about Breast Cancer to help us be more educated about it. Of course I can't remember everything she said, but the one thing she taught me that really stuck was that exercising vigorously 3 times per week decreases your chances of breast cancer significantly. I didn't know that! Just another reason to get my buns to the gym.

Enjoy BLUE day around the City Daily Photo Blogs. To check out more beautiful blue pictures:

Towne Cinemas

Towne Cinemas is our local dollar theater. Each seat is 1.50, anyone, anytime, anyday. It's a great deal!! The snacks are good and the theater has a fun ambience (read: funky oldness). My inlaws call it the "Sticky Shoe" and that is accurate sometimes, but it's not that bad - hey, we go there all the time!

Dan Peterson Halloween Carnival TONIGHT!

Dan Peterson is a school for students with severe to profound disabilities in the Alpine School District. Each fall they hold a Halloween Carnival. It is a FANTASTIC event that brings students, their families and the staff together for a really fun evening. While they are at it, they raise money for the schools classes and programs. If you like Sloppy Joe, then you will LOVE this great family friendly event.

Pumpkins

Several homes around our neighborhood have local pumpkins for sale. We bought a small pumpkin yesterday and need to carve it... but what should we carve?

Chadder's: An American Fork Original? Not Exactly.

Chadder's opened a few months ago in American Fork over near the Meadow's shopping center. It created quite a stir because people swore that it was "just like In N Out."

Well, it turns out it really was just like In N Out. The people from the real In N Out took them to court and Chadder's had to change their color scheme and quit serving items off the the In N Out 'secret menu'.

When it first opened, the line for the drive-through went clear across the parking lot of Smith's grocery store, but the lines have died down now. The closest In N Out is in Las Vegas and most California natives will say it is worth the drive. Chadder's is still pretty busy on weekends and I usually see a few people in the drive-through when I drive past. When it was making news for the copycat scandal we went and waited in line to try it, simply because we thought it might be gone soon. The food was pretty good, very much like In N Out, actually.

HOT TIP: If you want a REALLY good burger in American Fork, you will go to Parker's Drive-In or JCW's.
